Mozambique: Provinces
Surfers are drawn to Praia da Macaneta which can be reach by ferry from Maputo. The golden sands of Ponta do Ouro beach are best reached from South Africa, although the 17 Km journey from Maputo can be made in 4x4 vehicle. Some 5 Km further north from here is the beautiful beach Ponta do Malongane, with its white sand and blue-green sea.
A long reef running parallel to the beach of Praia do Xai-Xai provides natural protection against strong waves at high tide and from which shellfish can be collected. Bilene lies on the shores of a 27Km long lagoon, which may be crossed by boat to reach the sea. Another popular beach is Zongoene,at the mouth of the Limpopo River.
In addition to theworld-famous Bazaruto Archipelago , this province also boasts many superb beaches, amongst them Praia de Zavala , praia de Zavora , Baia dos Cocos, Praia do Tofo, Praia da Barra and Pomene.
Beira’s best beaches are found between the Club Nautico and the lighthouse. Six miles an inland resort situated about 10Km from the city centre, consists of an artificial lagoon, with islands where visitors can swing or hire pedal boats.
A wonderful beach of endless white sand, Praia de Zafala is 45Km north of Quelimane. The beach is lined by dense and leafy casuarinas trees. Praia de Pebane is another white sand beach north of Quelimane.
The miles of white sand and pale, crystal blue waters of Praia das Chocas, on the mainland near Mozambique Island, make it a very popular beach as are Praia de Fernao Veloso, to the north, and Relanzapo.
The palm-lined beach of Praia do Wimbe is noted for its white sand. From here visitors can walk to the lighthouse and nearby Praia do Farol beach. Mecufi and Mocimboa da Praia Beaches are also recommended.
